Join your first memoir discussion of the extraordinary life of the late Vince Copley, a first Nations elder. In this author talk, co-author Lea McInernery and Vince's daughter Kara McEwen join us to share Vince's story of finding kindness in the midst of prejudice, and joy in living life to the full. Vince was born on a government mission, in poverty in 1936, and lost five family members by the time he was fifteen. He faced extreme hardship but managed to always find light in the darkness. He dedicated his life to helping make life better for his people, with his ‘brother’ from the boys’ home, Charlie Perkins. Vince tells his story with humour, humility and wisdom. Written with his friend Lea McInerney over many cups of tea, it is an Australian classic in the making, a plain-speaking account of hardship, courage and optimism told without self-pity or bignoting. Vince repeatedly requested access to anthropologist Ronald Berndt’s field notes, embargoed until 2024, which were based on conversations with Vince’s grandfather Barney regarding Ngadjuri culture. Sadly, Vince died in January 2022, having not had the opportunity to read his grandfather’s stories. His book will be available for purchase on the day. Bookings are essential.
