Looby Documentary Screening
Looby Documentary Screening
Join us for a free screening of the acclaimed film 'Looby' followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers to mark 100 years of the Archibald Prize. Due to current COVID restrictions, attendees will be required to wear a mask. About Looby This documentary film uncovers the life and work of acclaimed indigenous painter Keith Looby. Looby’s insistence on painting controversial figures—from communist Rupert Lockwood to feminist Anne Summers—won him few friends in power. Likewise, his illustrations on the horrors of colonialism remain confronting today. Looby reveals the ruthless politics of Australian art world. It's the story of what happens when an artist chooses to speak out. About Keith Looby Born in Sydney, Keith Looby entered the National Art School as a fifteen year old and graduated with an unmistakable style that went on to win the Sulman, Blake and Archibald prizes. The latter with Max Gillies as Bob Hawke in 1984, with his works being owned by all major public galleries in Australia as well as New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). The producers will be available to answer audience questions after the film. Date: Saturday, 10 July 2021 Time: Registration from 4.15pm, event from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. Venue: City of Perth Library, 573 Hay Street, Perth Cost: Free, book now as places are limited. Painting image above: Max Gillies by Keith Looby (1984, Archibald winner).
