Saturday 13 July, 1pm, join artist Nicholas Currie for a lunch-time talk on his work 'Spot the difference (door)', currently showing in the exhibition 'Stranger than fiction' at West Space.
A descendent of the Mununjali clan of Yugambeh people, artist Nicholas Currie grew up on Larrakia Country before moving to Wurundjeri Country, where he went to art school. Nicholas’ work across painting and installation explores themes of Indigeneity, emotional responses and larger community values.
Nicholas has created a door that will never open, adorned with painting, a horseshoe, and personal artefacts; a pair of thongs, a shirt, a cap. Almost cartoon-like in the looseness of its creation and the precision of its wit, 'Spot the difference (door)' is a reminder that our experience of the world is through the lens of our privilege.
Grab lunch and join us for this informal conversation between Nicholas Currie and his dad, Rodney Currie, on the artwork and their embedded histories in Collingwood.
West Space is found on Level 1 of the Perry Street building, Collingwood Yards. Entry is free. For more see: westspace.org.au
