In the Frame: Ricky Maynard
Join the Art Gallery of New South Wales for a special NAIDOC Week edition of In the Frame – a series of lively conversations with artists and thinkers that unpacks the connections between art and the ideas, issues and events that matter most to us today. Hear Tasmanian Aboriginal photographer Ricky Maynard in conversation with journalist and presenter Rachael Hocking about his lifelong commitment to documentary photography and the 2021 NAIDOC theme ‘Heal Country!’ This year’s NAIDOC theme calls for greater protections for our lands, waters, sacred sites and cultural heritage and recognises that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have lived and cared for this country for more than 65,000 years. Maynard’s powerful images speak to this history and explore First Nations sovereignty, survival and enduring connection to Country. Maynard’s photographs are currently on display at the Art Gallery of NSW alongside works by five other First Nations artists as part of the exhibition Longing for home, an exhibition that explores the way a longing for Country can be characterised by yearning, distance, time and space. Join the event on YouTube or Facebook, or catchup later on the Gallery channel.

Welcome to NAIDOC.

We acknowledge all First Peoples of the beautiful lands on which we live and celebrate their enduring knowledge and connections to Country. We honour the wisdom of and pay respect to Elders past and present.
