My name is Patricia Conlon, my family are from Cherbourg Aboriginal township approximately 350 kms northwest of Brisbane.

This year’s NAIDOC Theme – Because of Her – We Can is such an inspirational theme because of the important role women play in our lives and in our communities.
My mother is my Inspiration. My mum is Eileen Conlon, she adopted me as a baby in 1958.

Had she not adopted me, she would have been my Aunty, so I remained in my family and was not removed as was practice in those days, because of past government policies. To stand up to the authorities of the day ensuring I remained in my family, speaks volumes of the person my mum was. My mum not only adopted me, but also raised her oldest granddaughter after her mum passed away and three grandsons. She also looked after many, many other children and anyone who needed a bed or a feed. She never ever turned anyone away. She was small in stature but a tower of strength. She was gentle and caring, and full of love as only a mother can be – she had the qualities of a real mum.

She taught me respect and civility, she was there to support and encourage me in anything I did, she was there when I had my three sons, and whenever I needed her - I am proud to say that I am who I am Because of Her.

Welcome to NAIDOC.
