Ms. Jodie Welsh
Jodie Welsh, a proud Gamilaroi/Gomeroi and Murrawari woman, is the Founder and Artistic Director of Brolga Dance Academy, a transformative cultural space based in Redfern on Gadigal Country. More than a dance school, Brolga is a place where culture is lived, identity is strengthened, and young Aboriginal people are supported to grow with pride, confidence and belonging.
Through her leadership, Jodie has created a safe and empowering environment where children learn not only dance but respect, connection, discipline and cultural knowledge. Brolga students regularly perform at major events, sharing First Nations stories on prominent stages, while also delivering school cultural education dance programs that promote cultural understanding and respect across communities, and providing cultural connection to young people in correctional centres.
Jodie’s work fosters powerful intergenerational connections, with performances supported and guided by Elders to ensure cultural integrity while strengthening intergenerational connections and reinforcing community pride. She is deeply committed to mentoring young people, supporting families, and creating opportunities that build strong futures.
In recognition of her leadership and impact, Jodie was named the 2023 Sydney City Businessperson of the Year, and Brolga Dance Academy was awarded the 2023 Business of the Year – Performing Arts.
Through Brolga Dance Academy, Jodie Welsh is nurturing the next generation of leaders, ensuring culture is celebrated, sustained and carried forward with strength and pride.
