Alex Wilson, Sportsperson Award finalist

Alex “Ally” Wilson is a proud Ngarrindjeri woman from Murray Bridge, South Australia, and an elite Australian basketballer and Olympian whose journey reflects resilience, cultural pride and a deep commitment to inspiring the next generation. She made her debut in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) at just 16 with the Adelaide Lightning, launching a professional career that has taken her to the international stage.

Ally has faced injuries and setbacks throughout her career, but each challenge has strengthened her determination to represent her community and inspire young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander athletes. She believes strongly that representation matters and proudly carries her Ngarrindjeri and Aboriginal identity wherever she competes, including on the global stage.

Her achievements include representing Australia in 3x3 basketball at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and winning bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. She has also secured gold medals at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup and earned multiple Most Valuable Player honours.

Beyond her sporting success, Ally remains deeply connected to community, using her platform to encourage participation in sport and promote cultural pride. She is a powerful role model who inspires young people to pursue their goals while staying grounded in culture and identity.
