Mrs. Christine Corby AM
Christine Corby AM is a proud Gamilaraay woman and a highly respected leader in Aboriginal health who has driven transformative change in north-west New South Wales for nearly four decades. Returning to Walgett in 1975, she began her work supporting the establishment of the Aboriginal Legal Service before recognising the urgent need for culturally appropriate healthcare.
In 1986, Christine became the founding Chief Executive Officer of Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service (WAMS), guiding its growth from a small shopfront to a vital community-controlled health service employing around 100 staff and delivering thousands of consultations each year. Under her leadership, WAMS has expanded to provide holistic care across maternal health, mental health, substance use and wellbeing, while achieving sector-leading accreditation standards.
Christine has also championed broader community initiatives, including the Walgett Community Garden, improved water and dental services, and the establishment of Freedom Ride Memorial Park. A strong advocate and skilled negotiator, she has represented her community across major Aboriginal health organisations and advisory bodies.
Her leadership, grounded in a vision of “health if life is health,” has strengthened health outcomes, cultural recognition and community resilience, earning numerous honours including appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia.
