Girringun Aboriginal Corporation
Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026, Girringun Aboriginal Corporation has become one of Australia's most influential Indigenous-led organisations, setting the national benchmark for Traditional Owner-led Caring for Country, cultural governance and self-determination. Representing nine Traditional Owner groups across North Queensland, Girringun has spent three decades demonstrating how Indigenous leadership delivers lasting environmental, cultural, social and economic outcomes.
Founded and led for 30 years by visionary Indigenous leader Phil Rist, Girringun is internationally recognised for Indigenous-led land and sea management. Phil continues to stand alongside the nine Traditional Owner groups, spearheading Process Unite - a movement strengthening Indigenous governance and advancing genuine self-determination.
Through its respected Ranger programs, Girringun manages more than one million hectares of land and Sea Country across the Wet Tropics and Great Barrier Reef World Heritage areas. Its work brings together cultural knowledge and contemporary science through cultural fire management, biodiversity conservation, marine monitoring, threatened species protection and cultural heritage protection.
Girringun has pioneered Indigenous Sea Country governance, helping establish Australia's first Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreement within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. It is also internationally recognised for its Indigenous Protected Areas work, World Heritage leadership, and approaches that place Traditional Owner knowledge and decision-making at the centre of conservation and land and sea management.
Beyond Caring for Country, Girringun is renowned for celebrating and preserving Aboriginal culture through its internationally recognised Cultural Centre, which shares the rich histories, art, knowledge and living cultures of the region's Traditional Owners. At the heart of all its work is the transfer of knowledge between Elders and younger generations, creating employment, strengthening leadership and ensuring culture continues to thrive.
As Girringun celebrates 30 years of Indigenous leadership, it continues to honour the vision of its founding Elders while empowering the next generation of Traditional Owner leaders. Its legacy is one of courage, innovation and resilience - demonstrating that when Indigenous people lead the stewardship of Country, culture and community, everyone benefits.
