Goologoolup NAIDOC Screening: The Redfern Story (2014)
The Redfern Story traces the extraordinary story of a group of Aboriginal activists in 1970s Redfern, Sydney, who came together to create the country’s first Aboriginal theatre company, National Black Theatre. In doing so, they aimed to seek out ways in which systematic oppression experienced by their community could be challenged and defeated, through a grassroots approach to theatre that combined street performances, dance, demonstrations and workshops. Told through archival footage of performances and protests as well as present-day interviews with activists, The Redfern Story presents a fascinating insight into the activism and political strategies of the emerging Aboriginal rights movement of the 1970s. This significant moment in Australian political history has been relatively overlooked until recently, and filmmaker Darlene Johnson presents a tribute that is not to be missed.
