FAQs

Nominations - Frequently Asked Questions

How are winners selected?

Winners are selected by the National NAIDOC Committee (NNC). Nominees will be notified if they have been shortlisted as Award Finalists and the winner in each category will be announced at the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony. At all stages, the decision of the Committee is final and no discussion will be entered into.

How are nominations judged?

Nominations are assessed based on the information provided in the nomination submission. The following criteria will be taken into consideration in assessing nominations:

  • past and current achievements;
  • demonstrated excellence in the nominated category;
  • the individual’s status as an inspirational role model for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples and the broader Australian community; and/or
  • the individual’s future goals and their likely impact.

Please note Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups, businesses and organisations are able to be nominated for the Creative, Caring for Country and Culture, Education and Innovation Award Categories.

Only those nominations which are eligible (see Selection Criteria) will be considered.

How do I submit my nomination?

To submit your nomination, send your completed nomination form to NAIDOCnominations@niaa.gov.au and attach any supporting evidence you would like to include.

Should I include supporting documentation?

No, supporting documentation will not be accepted. Only one A4 page written response to the Selection Criteria will be accepted.

How can I check if my nomination has been received?

Once your nomination is sent to NAIDOCnominations@niaa.gov.au you will receive an automatic response confirming that your nomination has been received.

Can I nominate for more than one category on the same form?

Yes you have the option to nominate for more than one category on the nomination form. Please ensure that when you address the criteria it is applicable to all award categories.

Who can be nominated for an Award?

Any person whose achievements meet the selection criteria can be nominated. All people nominated for a National NAIDOC Week Award must be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, as defined by the following:

  • be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;
  • identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; and/or
  • be accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander by an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.

If a nominee has won an Award in the past, are they able to win again?

Yes. If a nominee has previously won an Award, they can still win another Award as long as:

  • It has been 10 years or more since they won their previous Award in that category, or;
  • The Award they win this year is in a different category to the Award they have previously won.

Can a nominee win more than one Award in the one year?

No. An individual may not win an Award in more than one category in one year. If a nominee ranks in the first position across multiple Award categories, the NNC will select the most relevant category for that nominee to win.

When do nominations close?

Nominations for the 2023 National NAIDOC Week Awards close on Friday 3 March 2023 at 8:00pm (AEDT).
