Tickets now on sale for National NAIDOC’s 50th birthday
26 February 2007
Statement by National NAIDOC Week Chairperson, Aden Ridgeway
It is with great excitement that I announce that tickets for the 50th anniversary National NAIDOC Awards and Ball go on sale today.
I invite all Australians to join us in celebrating our 50th year with the deadly theme 50 years: Looking Forward, Looking Blak.
Darwin will be the host city for the National NAIDOC Awards and Ball on Black Friday, 13 July. The awards recognise the outstanding achievements of Indigenous Australians in such categories as the Elder of the Year, the Indigenous Person of the Year and the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Hosted by Leah Purcell, the ball will be a showcase of Indigenous history, culture and our future. And of course the night would not be complete without some outstanding Indigenous entertainers including Australian Idol finalist Jessica Mauboy, Yothu Yindi and many more.
To avoid disappointment, I recommend you get in quickly and snap up the tickets as they won’t last long.
Although Darwin will be home to the National NAIDOC celebrations, I encourage all Australians to get involved in their local community NAIDOC events throughout NAIDOC Week.
There is still time for aspiring Indigenous artists to design a poster that will be used in all NAIDOC celebrations across Australia. Remember designs must incorporate the 50th anniversary theme and be entered by 30 March.
I would also like to encourage people to submit nominations for the National NAIDOC Awards by 18 April.
Nomination forms for the National NAIDOC Awards and the poster competition are available online at www.naidoc.org.au or from your local Indigenous Coordination Centre (ICC).
