Winner Announced for the 2007 NAIDOC Poster Competition

3 May 2007

Statement by the Chairperson, Aden Ridgeway

It’s with great pleasure that I announce Tyeli Hannah as the winner of the 2007 NAIDOC Poster Competition.

Tyeli’s artwork, entitled ‘The Path We Lead’ joins a NAIDOC tradition that can be traced back to 1972.

In keeping with this tradition the poster reflects the NAIDOC theme ‘50 years: Looking Forward, Looking Blak’ and will be displayed across the nation to celebrate the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC.

The strong imagery and boldness of colour represents our people and their journey over the past fifty years. The figure climbing the staircase is carrying our battle-torn flags towards a brighter future – a future where all Australians are equal and where our flags are carried with pride and shared by all.

The symbolism in the artwork pays tribute to the difficult past our people have experienced and promotes a sense of hope for the future. A message the Committee considers crucial during the 50th Anniversary of NAIDOC.

‘The Path We Lead’ will now feature on the NAIDOC Week poster to encourage all Australians to participate in NAIDOC Week celebrations and activities from 8-15 July.

This year we received a record number of entries, with over 200 Indigenous people of all ages from across the country sending in their artworks. It was very encouraging to receive so many entries at such a high standard in this anniversary year.

I would like to thank all entrants who took the time and effort to enter the competition this year.
