Winner Announced for the National Poster Competition 2006

7 June 2006

Statement by the Chairperson Aden Ridgeway

I am pleased to announce that the winner of the 2006 NAIDOC Poster Competition is Charmaine Green from Geraldton in Western Australia. Congratulations, Charmaine.

Ms Green’s artwork entitled ‘Life Circle’ captures the theme for NAIDOC Week: Respect the Past – Believe in the Future. It reflects the bringing of knowledge and traditions from our rich past into the present to carry with us as we walk towards a brighter future.

This year we received an encouraging number of entries from Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders from across the country. The $5,000.00 prize money is a fantasic incentive for people to have a go!

I would like to thank all entrants who took the time to enter the competition this year. There were many quality entries that showed hard work and thought in expressing the theme: Respect the Past – Believe in the Future as art. I encourage those who did not win this year to have another go in 2007.

I look forward to seeing Charmaine’s poster displayed in work places, schools, community organisations and government agencies all over Australia.

The NAIDOC poster has been around since the early 1970s, encouraging all Australians to participate in NAIDOC celebrations and activities. The committee will be working to continue this tradition many years into the future.

Posters are available through www.naidoc.org.au or your nearest Indigenous Coordination Centre:
