Celebrating Indigenous people and cultures: NAIDOC Week 2005

Celebrations for NAIDOC Week activities will begin in cities, towns and remote communities across the country this week, starting on 3 July.
Encouraged by the national theme; Our future begins with solidarity, NAIDOC Week (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) activities are being held to celebrate the survival of Indigenous culture and the Indigenous contribution to modern Australia.
Adelaide is the host city for National NAIDOC activities, with the highlight of the week being the National NAIDOC Award Ceremony and Ball in Adelaide, (8 July), where 10 Indigenous Achievers will be honoured for their achievement in eight categories:
Lifetime achievement Award, Person of the Year (Male), Person of the Year (Female), Sportsperson of the Year, Apprentice of the Year, Scholar of the Year, Youth of the Year, Elder of the Year (Female), Elder of the year (Male), Artist of the Year.
Entertainment for the Awards and Ball will be provided by performers and celebrities including Shakaya, Casey Donovan and Coloured Stone. Tickets to the NAIDOC Ball, 8 July in Adelaide, are on sale at BASS: 131 246.
Interim National NAIDOC Committee Chairman, Tauto Sansbury called on Indigenous Australians to work together in solidarity to celebrate Indigenous culture, traditions and spirituality.
“This is a crucial time in Australia’s history. We hope everyone will find out what is happening in their region and join with us in celebrating Indigenous history, culture and spirituality,” he said.
