NAIDOC Excitement Grows

17 June 2005

As posters for National NAIDOC activities go up in cities, towns and remote communities across the country this week, excitement is growing about activities to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2005.

The artwork depicted on this year’s poster “Lift Our Spirits’” is by a 27 year old Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander man from Cairns, Benjamin Hodges. It was the winning entry in the national Indigenous art competition.

NAIDOC Week (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) celebrations begin 3 July. Adelaide is the host city for National NAIDOC activities, with the highlight of the week being the National NAIDOC Award Ceremony and Ball, featuring artists such as Casey Donovan, Shakaya and Coloured Stone.

Interim National NAIDOC Committee Chairman, Tauto Sansbury called on Indigenous Australians to work together in solidarity to celebrate our culture, traditions and spirituality.

“All Australians need to embrace Indigenous culture because it is alive, vibrant and ever-evolving. We hope they will join with us in celebrating NAIDOC,” he said.

Tickets to the NAIDOC Ball, 8 July in Adelaide, are on sale at BASS: 131 246.
