Theme for NAIDOC Week announced

6 April 2005

Tauto Sansbury, Chairperson of the National NAIDOC Committee 2005, today announced the national theme for NAIDOC Week 2005:

OUR FUTURE BEGINS WITH SOLIDARITY

“We in Adelaide are honoured to be given the opportunity to host such a prestigious event on the Indigenous calendar—and we invite all Australians to join us in celebrating Indigenous culture and achievement,” Mr Sansbury said.

NAIDOC 2005 will be held in the week 3–10 July, and the national focus city will be Adelaide, South Australia, where the national NAIDOC awards ceremony and ball will take place on Friday 8 July.

“Our theme expresses Indigenous peoples’ desire for a better future, one in which we can enjoy the opportunities available to other Australians and live in a reconciled nation. We have called for solidarity because Indigenous people must stand together and the wider Australian community must stand with us.

“That is what NAIDOC is all about—celebrating our contribution to the nation together with all Australians.”

Indigenous Australians are now invited to take part in the annual NAIDOC poster competition based on the theme. The winning artwork will be used on the national NAIDOC poster.

They are also invited to submit nominations for national awards for outstanding achievement in a number of categories.

Mr Sansbury is Chairperson of the Patpa Warra Yunti Regional Council and chairs the Committee for NAIDOC National 2005 comprising active/distinguished members of Adelaide’s Indigenous community.

Nomination forms for the NAIDOC awards and poster competition, and other details about NAIDOC 2005 will be available at www.naidoc.org.au.
