The National NAIDOC Awards recognise the outstanding contributions that individual Indigenous Australians make to their own communities and the broader Australian community.

Nominations for the 2008 National NAIDOC Awards are now closed.

The winners of the 2008 National NAIDOC Awards were announced at the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony held in Canberra on Saturday 12 July.

The National NAIDOC Committee would like to thank those who took the time to nominate for the 2008 NAIDOC Awards.

The award categories are:

  • Apprentice of the Year
  • Artist of the Year
  • Elder of the Year (female)
  • Elder of the Year (male)
  • Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Person of the Year*
  • Scholar of the Year
  • Sportsperson of the Year
  • Youth of the Year

*The Person of the Year may be eligible to access a bursary of $20,000

Nominees will be assessed on the following:

  • Demonstrated excellence in their nominated category
  • The individual’s status as an inspirational role model for Indigenous people and the broader Australian population
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • The indivdual’s future goals and likely impact
  • Demonstrated commitment to personal/vocational/career development

Previous NAIDOC winners include Ernie Dingo (1994 Person of the Year), Anthony Mundine (2000 Person of the Year), Deborah Mailman (2003 Person of the Year), Patrick Dodson and Mick Dodson (1998 Joint Person of the Year), Kyle Vander Kuyp (1985 and 1994 Sportsperson of the Year).
